ABOUT US

UNITED WORKS’ long term association with the liquid petroleum gas industry dates back to its’ inception in India in 1954.  However, the company which was founded in 1930 was originally involved in the petrol pump business together with the allied industry of importing cars.

In 1953-54 Burmah Shell commenced its operations in India, with its’ Head quarters located in Bombay, later being nationalised and its’ name changed to Bharat Petroleum Corpn. Ltd.  At approximately the same time one of the directors of United Works was sent by M/s. Burmah Shell to Shell Research U.K. & Shell France for training in the field of liquid petroleum gas.  On his return to India M/s. United Works diversified into the field of liquid petroleum gas burners, controls and fittings.  Originally screwdriver technology was used, the commercial burners being imported in knock down condition from Societé Pour L’Utilisation Rationnelle des Gas-France.  The import of these commercial burners having been arranged by M/s Burmah Shell along with the import of domestic gas stoves from Belgium bearing the trade name “Atag”.  In return United Works exported its indigenously developed and patented Sunbeam Canteen Burner to France.

Under various reciprocal patent agreements negotiated with Societé Pour L’Utilisation Rationnelle des Gas-France United Works commenced indigenous manufacture of these commercial and industrial burners and gradually over a period of time added a large range of other burners, together with controls and pipeline equipment all of which was developed by the active R & D Department of United Works.

Since its’ early beginnings United Works. Always a leader in the field of liquefied petroleum gas burners and equipment, has also been actively involved in the development and regulation of the Industry within India.  To this end, our directors have helped train generations of oil company sales officers and L.P.G. Managers as well as many of today’s oil company appointed gas dealers.

Later on Esso & Caltex entered the market and commenced commercial operations in 1958, setting up their own bottling facilities and distribution networks.  United Works was also actively involved in their personnel training and sale of its’ products through their outlets.  Esso & Caltex eventually merging and being nationalised, their name changing to Hindustan Petroleum Corpn. Ltd.,

Indian Oil Corporation Ltd., being the last to enter the field as late as 1967, rapidly expanded to become the largest of the three oil companies.  As with the other two oil companies United Works was from the start actively involved and co-ordinated with Indian Oil and its’ dealers.

Today, the position is much the same, in that United Works retains its’ excellent rapport with the oil company L.P.G. Executives and their sales’ officers.  As has always been the practice, the company is actively involved in running training programmes for the oil companies as well as for their prospective and present commercial and industrial customers.  United Works’ also regularly undertakes safety clinics for all three oil companies and co-ordinates whenever required with P.C.R.A. Directors of the company hold active positions on various Indian Standards Institute Committees dealing with developments, safety and regulation of the liquid petroleum gas industry in India.

As from the inception of Liquid Petroleum Gas in India, United Works is rightly considered a leader in it’s field and remains one of only a select few approved manufacturers, contractors and suppliers.

United Works’ products are marketed by the three oil company gas dealers as well as vide a well established network of its own distributors located throughout India.  Each of its’ own distributors being thoroughly trained on appointment in the United Works’ method of installation so as to ensure that all installations and material supplied conforms to Indian Standard 6044 (Part-I) 1971.

United Works endeavours to live up to its’ motto “we know more about gas than you can ask” by having its’ active R&D Department constantly upgrade and update its extensive range of products catering to both the liquid petroleum and now natural  gas fields always keeping in mind stringent quality and safety controls.  Over the years United Works has greatly modified, added and expanded to its’ range as the market diversified and developed in both the commercial and industrial fields.

A large part of today’s sales are  due to the specialist knowledge and expertise that the sales team and executives of  United  Works have developed, offering a turnkey  service to their customers  involving  the design, development and production of specialised burners, equipment and automated process controls catering to the individual customers’ requirements.  Turnkey projects are also undertaken for industry starting with consultancy and planning through to manufacture, installation and commissioning.

To detail some of the vast range of products manufactured by United Works today.  Basically, our products fall under three main classifications namely, Burners, controls and  pipeline fittings.  Building on the initial range of burners manufactured in the 1950’s United Works today manufacturers a large range of burners suitable for every and any heating application ranging from tiny laboratory and pilot burners all the way to high capacity furnace burners.

Our burners are installed and  operational in many diverse fields of industry, commerce and catering in the commercial and catering field from small café stalls to industrial canteens and five star hotel and flight kitchens of international standards. Our range of equipment covers selected fields of industry to mention but a few bread, biscuit,  confectionary, textiles, glass working, sections of the chemical industry, the jewellery industry and metal working.

From 1976 to 1985 United Works also manufactured domestic gas stoves bearing the brand name DOMINO and SUPER NOVA for the Indian Market.

Due to the enormous changes and liberalisation taking place at present in the L.P. Gas Industry in India, United Works has great hopes for the future in which the private sector will play an ever increasing role eventually completing on a level with the public sector units.

United Works is already working closely with the private sector to develop and upgrade its range of equipment and controls; expanding into new areas of thrust with fuel saving, energy-efficient burners, together with a far wider and more automated range of controls.  Due to perceived restrictions in sanction and supply of gas there are vast areas of commerce and industry and indeed many entire industries that are left untapped and untouched by L.P.G. at present.  With the entry of the private sector United Works plans to substantially increase its range of burners and controls to cater to a wide spectrum of end users at present left relatively uncovered.

One of the major growth areas perceived by United Works as having enormous potential for its’ equipment being the building industry.  Within the next few years standards which are used abroad will be brought into the Indian domain and reticulated gas systems will become the norm for all high rise buildings and housing estates.  United Works plans to be in the forefront of this exciting new development.

Finally, United Works is already co-ordinating with the new entrants into the L.P.G. Industry by providing training expertise, its help, guidance and experience whenever required and has built a strong and reciprocal relationship right from the beginning.
